The auditorium has a limited nubmer of seats, so if you would like to participate, please register by sending an email to torgeird(a)sintef.no Helen Sharp is a Senior Lecturer in the Computing Department of the Open University, and a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Centre for HCI Design at City University, London. She is also co-leader of the Department's Empirical Studies of Software Development research group. Since working as a developer in the 1980s, Helen has been keen to understand software practice, i.e. how software is developed in reality, and thereby to inform the development of better support for software engineers. This has led her to look at a variety of research areas, from software design support environments to ethnographic studies of developers, and from process modelling to quality assurance. Throughout her investigations, she focuses consistently on the people and their social interactions, rather than on the technologies available and where to apply them. Her recent studies have focused on agile development, specifically the social side of eXtreme Programming, and more recently the integration of HCI concerns into agile development. En del av oss har besluttet å innta flytende føde på et annet sted og til en annen tid en tidligere searchbeer. Vi har bestemt oss for å ta det på fredag kl 1900 på Three Lions (gamle scapa). De skal ha spiselig pubmat der også + et utvalg fludium som er spesifikt for denne årstiden. Det vil si mørke, søtlige maltvæsker som ofte også varmer litt mer enn de mer tradisjonelle lyse maltproduktene man foretrekker på varmere dager. We examine a representative collection of such terminologies, and draw (somewhat sad) conclusions as to the current state of the art. 1300-1430 A General Introduction to Biomedical Ontology Abstract: Ontologies to support scientific research and clinical medicine have special characteristics, which we shall outline in terms of a distinction between three levels: (1) the level of reality; (2) the level of cognitive representations; and (3) the level of the publicly accessible concretizations of such cognitive representations. Against this background we shall clarify the relations between ontologies, terminologies, information models, databases, patient records, and similar artifacts, and we shall show how the ontologies of the future need to be constructed in such a way as to support the research and clinical needs of the future. 1500-1630 How Ontologies Create Research Communities Abstract: We will describe the OBO Foundry, a collaborative experiment involving a group of influential biomedical ontology developers who have agreed in advance to the adoption of a growing set of principles specifying best practices in ontology development. The primary goal of the Foundry is to establish gold standard reference ontologies, one for each core domain of biomedical science. Recently, ISO Standard 15926 "Lifecycle Integration of Process Plant Data Including Oil and Gas Production Facilities", a data model initially designed 'to support the integration and handover of large engineering artefacts', has been proposed for general use as an upper level ontology. When examined in light of this proposal, however, ISO 15926 is seen to be marked by a series of quite astonishing defects, which may however provide general lessons for the developers of ontologies in the future. 1400-1530 The Nature of Disease: Future Pathways in Biomedical Ontology Abstract: Current conceptions of health and disease focus on the signs and symptoms visible to the clinician and patient. Increasingly, however, the demands of molecular medicine will enforce a new understanding of diseases and of their molecular origins. We will sketch an outline of this new understanding and of its applications in clinical informatics. In connection with Rune Sætre's defense, associate professor Jong C. Park from KAIST, South Korea, will give the following guest lecture: Title: Natural Language Information Service for Experts in Biology and Bioinformatics through Text Mining and Management Date: Wednesday 28 June Time: 10.15-11.00 Room: IT-454 (IT-Vest, tidligere Nye Fysikk, Lunchrom 454 i fjerde). Abstract: Our research group at KAIST has been working on providing natural language information services that are customized for users who have special concerns, such as text animation for pre-teen children, automatic generation of sign language expressions from texts for aurally challenged, emotionally appropriate speech synthesis for the elderly, and text mining and management for experts in biology and bioinformatics, all using a lexicalized grammar framework for linguistically motivated natural language processing. In particular, the current scope of our work on text mining and management includes information extraction from MEDLINE abstracts for protein-protein interaction information, semi-automatic extension of Gene Ontology with information from MEDLINE and other resources, natural language query interpretation for management of information from multiple heterogeneous databases, and visualization of information from MEDLINE for knowledge discovery, along with a few other applications. In this talk, I will introduce our general research directions for natural language information service, and describe the work on text mining and management in further detail. About the speaker: Jong C. Park has received BE and MSE in Computer Engineering from Seoul National University in Korea in 1984 and 1986, respectively, and after completing the obligatory military service in Korea, PhD in Computer & Information Science (Natural Language Processing) from the University of Pennsylvania in USA in 1996. After working at the University of Pennsylvania for two years as a postdoctoral researcher, he has joined the faculty of the Computer Science Division at KAIST in 1998, now as Associate Professor.
